Botulinum toxin injection is the fastest and most effective way to temporarily reduce wrinkles. Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by bacteria that, when used selectively, inhibits muscle contraction. Injected into the facial muscles, it can deliver lasting results for months.

The mechanism of action of the wrinkle-smoothing toxin is to prevent the release of acetylcholine (ACH) from nerve endings into the muscles, temporarily blocking muscle movement.

How does botulinum toxin work?

During the procedure, the wrinkle-smoothing toxin is injected into specific points on the skin to be treated using small punctures. The procedure is quick, relatively painless, and requires minimal recovery time.

It is an excellent solution for smoothing wrinkles between the eyebrows that cause a frowning expression, eliminating forehead wrinkles, and reducing crow’s feet around the eyes. It can also be used to shape the arch of the eyebrows while preserving some degree of facial expression.

It is also applied in smaller quantities to the lower face, for example, in combination with other treatments for correcting smoker’s lines. Additionally, it can weaken muscles that pull the lips downward and be used for rejuvenating the neck.

How long does the effect of Botox last?

It is important to note that the effect is not immediate but typically occurs within 7-14 days on average.

What results can be expected from the treatment?

Wrinkles resulting from the breaking of the skin, known as static wrinkles, often do not completely disappear with wrinkle-smoothing injections. These can be treated with wrinkle fillers or other skin-renewing procedures. However, with multiple wrinkle-smoothing treatments, even already damaged skin can regenerate, and static wrinkles can improve.

Possible side effects are transient. Usually, there is no trace of the procedure, but temporary swelling, redness, and occasionally bruising may occur at the injection sites, lasting less than 1 hour. Bruising can be concealed with makeup. Rare side effects include flu-like symptoms and headaches, lasting for a few hours or days. Partial eyelid drooping occurs in less than 1% of cases. All side effects are temporary and resolve on their own. For the first 24 hours after treatment, exercise is not recommended, and for the first 48 hours, avoid rubbing, pressing, or massaging the face. Sauna, tanning beds, and treatments involving intense heat should be avoided for two weeks. Horizontal body position is prohibited for 3-4 hours after the treatment.

Treatment is not recommended during pregnancy, breastfeeding, for individuals under 18 years of age, and for those with chronic illnesses.

How is the treatment performed?

Following the consultation, the specialist administers local anesthesia and injects Botox (botulinum toxin) into the treated area using a thin injection needle. With small punctures, the substance is evenly distributed under the skin, blocking the functioning of sweat-producing glands. The treatment involves minimal pain.

When can results be expected, and how long does it last?

The effects of Botox treatment can be felt 3-6 days after the procedure. If sweating persists in certain areas, additional treatments may be recommended.

The duration of the treatment’s effectiveness depends on individual factors, but generally, its effects last a minimum of 3-4 months, most commonly 8-12 months.

Immediately after the treatment, very rarely, skin irritation and mild swelling may occur at the injection sites, but these typically resolve spontaneously within 1-2 days.
